Range Rules & Safety Policies

Safety is our highest priority. By entering, remaining on, or participating in any activity on this range or training property, you acknowledge and agree to comply with all Range Rules, posted signage, verbal instructions from Range Staff and Instructors, and all applicable laws. Failure to comply may result in immediate removal without refund and/or a permanent ban.


1. Authority of Range Staff & Instructors

  • All Range Safety Officers (RSOs), Instructors, and Range Staff have full authority over all range operations and safety decisions.
  • All commands issued by Range Staff or Instructors must be followed immediately and without debate.
  • Range Staff may inspect any firearm, holster, ammunition, or equipment at any time.
  • Range Staff reserves the right to deny use of any firearm, ammunition, or gear deemed unsafe or inappropriate.

Staff decisions regarding safety are final.


2. Fundamental Firearm Safety Rules (Always in Effect)

The following rules apply at all times, without exception:

  1. Treat all firearms as loaded.
  2. Never allow the muzzle to point at anything you are not willing to destroy.
  3. Keep your finger off the trigger and outside the trigger guard until sights are on target and you intend to fire.
  4. Be aware of your target, surroundings, and what is beyond the target.
  5. Maintain proper muzzle discipline at all times.

Any violation of these rules may result in immediate removal from the range or class.


3. Eligibility, Conduct & Impairment

  • All participants must be physically and mentally capable of safely handling firearms.
  • Alcohol, marijuana, illegal drugs, or impairment of any kind are strictly prohibited.
  • Anyone suspected of impairment will be immediately removed.
  • Disorderly conduct, unsafe behavior, intimidation, or refusal to follow instructions will not be tolerated.

4. Required Safety Equipment

  • Eye protection is mandatory for all persons on or near the firing line.
  • Hearing protection is mandatory for all persons on or near the firing line.
  • Closed-toe footwear is strongly recommended.
  • Additional safety equipment may be required based on the class or training environment.

5. Range Status & Commands

All shooters must understand and comply with standard range commands:

“CEASE FIRE”

  • Immediately stop shooting.
  • Keep the muzzle pointed downrange.
  • Finger off the trigger.
  • Await further instructions.

“MAKE THE LINE SAFE”

  • Unload firearm.
  • Remove magazine.
  • Lock action open or open cylinder.
  • Place firearm on bench or designated surface with muzzle downrange.
  • Step back behind the firing line.

“COLD RANGE”

  • No handling of firearms.
  • No touching firearms, magazines, or gear on the bench.
  • No one may go downrange until authorized.

“HOT RANGE”

  • Firearms may be handled and shooting may resume under instructor or RSO direction.

6. Firearm Handling Rules

  • Firearms must remain pointed in a safe direction at all times.
  • No firearm handling is permitted during a cold range.
  • Firearms must be unloaded with actions open when not actively shooting.
  • Chamber flags may be required at the discretion of Range Staff.
  • No turning around with a firearm in hand.

7. Caliber & Firearm Consistency With Training

All firearms and calibers used on the range must be consistent with the specific class being taught.

  • Pistol Classes:
    Only pistol-caliber handguns are permitted.
    Rifles, pistol-caliber carbines (unless expressly authorized), and shotguns are prohibited.
  • Rifle Classes:
    Only rifle-caliber firearms appropriate to the course curriculum are permitted.
    Pistols and shotguns are prohibited unless the class explicitly includes transitions.
  • Shotgun Classes:
    Only shotguns and approved shotgun ammunition are permitted.
    Pistols and rifles are prohibited unless expressly authorized.
  • Mixed-Platform or Transition Courses:
    Only firearms specifically listed and approved in the course description may be used.

Range Staff and Instructors reserve the right to prohibit any firearm or caliber that does not align with the class objectives or safety requirements.


8. Drawing From Holster & Live-Fire Training

Unless otherwise stated, all students will be drawing from a holster and firing live ammunition as part of the course curriculum.

Holster Requirements

  • Holsters must be rigid and fully cover the trigger guard.
  • No soft, collapsible, or unsafe holsters.
  • Holsters must retain the firearm securely during movement.
  • Appendix, strong-side, and duty holsters may be used at instructor discretion.

Drawing & Shooting Rules

  • All draws will be conducted under instructor supervision.
  • Students must follow all commands regarding draw timing, cadence, and technique.
  • Unsafe draws, muzzle sweeping, or trigger finger violations will result in immediate corrective action or removal.

Reholstering

  • Reholstering must be done slowly, deliberately, and under control.
  • No speed reholstering.
  • Students may be required to visually confirm the holster is clear before reholstering.

9. Targets, Berms & Shooting Direction

  • Shooters may only fire into approved berms and backstops.
  • No cross-lane or cross-bay shooting unless directed by an instructor.
  • Only approved targets may be used.
  • Shooting range equipment, target stands, posts, or unauthorized objects is prohibited.

10. Ammunition Restrictions

The following ammunition is prohibited unless expressly approved:

  • Tracer, incendiary, or explosive ammunition
  • Armor-piercing, steel-core, or penetrator rounds
  • Any ammunition that poses a fire risk or damages range infrastructure

Range Staff may restrict ammunition types at any time.


11. Malfunctions & Unsafe Conditions

  • In the event of a malfunction, keep the firearm pointed downrange.
  • Wait a minimum of 30 seconds for suspected hangfires.
  • Signal the instructor or RSO if assistance is needed.
  • Do not attempt unsafe corrective actions.

12. Emergency Procedures

Medical Emergency

  • Call out “MEDIC” or “EMERGENCY.”
  • Cease fire immediately.
  • Follow instructor and staff direction.

Fire or Hazard

  • Call out “FIRE.”
  • Cease fire.
  • Evacuate if instructed.

All incidents must be reported immediately.


13. Enforcement, Removal & Discipline

  • Unsafe acts may result in:
    • Immediate removal from the range or class
    • Termination of training without refund
    • Suspension or permanent ban
    • Responsibility for damages

There is zero tolerance for unsafe firearm handling.


14. Assumption of Risk & Liability Notice

Firearms training involves inherent risk, including serious injury or death. By participating, you acknowledge and accept these risks and agree to comply with all safety rules and instructions. Participation may require execution of a separate waiver or release.


15. Final Reminder

If you are unsure about any rule or procedure, stop and ask an instructor or RSO.
